Introduction to Sasin GIM Program

Global Initiatives in Management (GIM) program is a collaborative curriculum between Sasin and Kellogg School of Management. The program objectives are to provide students with detailed understanding of current business/economic environment in a country and business sectors of their interest and allow them to establish business relationships that can be beneficial for students, the Thai business community and Thailand as a whole.

A GIM class has two components: a 11-week curriculum (during module 3.1 and/or 3.2) in Bangkok and a one-week (approximately) business field experience in a country of students’ choice. Class sessions in Bangkok will provide a broad overview of political, social, economic and business environment which will be valuable for students’ group projects. Students will meet with high-ranking officials, distinguished business figures, and distinguished academic guest speakers to discuss ideas on various areas of interest.  During the business field trip, students meet with business and government leaders and carry out the field research portion of their group projects.

Unlike regular classes at Sasin, a GIM class is a student-led course. Students initiate ideas and work to create a class based on their interests on a particular country and business sectors. A group of student leaders will be formed and each leader will be responsible for different position. Each student leader will form a student committee (or subcommittees) and they will work together in order to accomplish their objectives. Participation of all students is required and each non-leader student should participate in one of the student committees. There will be one faculty advisor for each GIM class and the role of the faculty advisor is to supervise/advice students and not to run the class in the conventional sense.

GIM Japan 2011 - Objective

GIM Japan 2011’s objective is to make the students understand more in detail about the business and economic environment in Japan and also understand the business sectors of their interests. The students will experience many Japanese business environments such as business structure, organization culture, management style, innovation, economic status, emerging trend, trade restriction, and competition.

Moreover, the course will provide an opportunity for students to meet with many high-ranking officials, entrepreneurs, successful business experts in Japan and academic guest speakers to discuss ideas and point of interests which, in turn, can help broadening the students’ horizon and conceptual framework. In the end, students should be able to utilize the knowledge and information they have collected during the course for their future careers or owned businesses.

Lastly, GIM course will require the students to arrange their own curriculum, which means that they will have to initiate ideas and set up classes based on their interests all by themselves. Also, students have to plan their business trip and make an appointment with companies they are going to visit. Each individual will have to participate and contribute to the team in order to accomplish the team’s objectives. This student-led course will help students refine their leadership and management skills.
